National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) is April 16, 2021 – this is your reminder to let your family know your values, goals, and preferences regarding future medical care.  Use this time to talk to your family to ensure you receive the medical care you want.  Under Wisconsin law, adults (not under legal guardianship) have the right to control decisions about their medical care, including the right to accept or refuse treatment.

This is also an important time to ensure you have your Health Care Power of Attorney and/or Living Will completed and executed.  These documents, when executed properly, will allow someone you appoint to assist in communicating your values, goals, and preferences regarding your medical care if you cannot.  Without these documents, guardianship proceedings (removing your legal rights to your own medical decisions) may be necessary.

For further information or assistance in completing your Health Care Power of Attorney and/or Living Will please call (920) 683-3500 to schedule an appointment with the Steimle Birschbach Estate Planning Team.

With the new year comes new estate and gift tax exemption levels. But what does this mean for you? Most clients I meet with are surprised to learn they (or more accurately, their family or beneficiaries) won't need to pay taxes when they die. As the estate tax laws are now, most people's estate will not need to pay taxes at death. Here is a very simplified explanation of how the Estate Tax works and why most people don't pay estate tax.
